An American dentist Walter Palmer, a brutal hunter paid a $55,000 bribe to wildlife guides to kill an "iconic" lion in Zimbabwe.
The 13-year-old lion was a major tourist attraction at Zimbabwe's famous Hwange National Park.
Cecil the lion Africa's best known big cats besides being a symbol of African pride was A HUGE source of CONTINUED income for that impoverished nation.

Zimbabwe, like many African countries, is battling to curb illegal hunting and poaching which threatens to make some of its wildlife extinct. Mr. Rodriguez, the head of Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, said the use of a bow and arrow heralded a new trend aimed at avoiding arrest.
"It's more silent. If you want to do anything illegal, that's the way to do it," he told BBC's Newsday program.
'Lion baited'
Cecil, a beloved resident of Hwange National Park and a major tourist draw for Zimbabwe. The 13-year-old black mane lion suffered a slow and painful death, according to the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.
The hunters lured him out of the park, the conservation group said, and Palmer then shot the lion with a bow and arrow
But the arrow wasn't enough to kill Cecil, who survived for another 40 hours until the hunters tracked him down and shot him with a gun.
The big cat was then skinned and beheaded, and the AMERICAN hunters tried to destroy the GPS collar that Cecil was wearing as part of research backed by Oxford University, allowing authorities to track its movements, the group said.
"I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite, was collared and part of a study until the end of the hunt," Palmer , the dentist from Minnesota said in a statement issued Tuesday. "I relied on the expertise of my local professional guides to ensure a legal hunt."
My morning prayer for Cecil the lion of the poor and mostly downtrodden Zimbabwean people and others like him HUNTED down by rich cowards like Walter Palmer the Butcher Dentist from Minnesota – is to find courage to fight this abhorrent injustice.
What a shame it will be if all of us seem mere mute onlookers, when part of our common heritage and rights to enjoy this planet are ROBBED by a few!
I for one - am NOT going to take it anymore.
I WILL SPEAK UP, I WILL STAND UP and I WILL FIGHT BRUTALITY by EDUCATED SO CALLED CIVILIZED PEOPLE against innocent animals and men.
I WILL FIGHT with my money, with my boycotts, with my words, with my convictions, with my compassionate reasoning - till this travesty against us stops.
